TikTok slander: how to get a video removed from TikTok when it lies about you

TikTok slander has no report button of its own. To get a video removed from TikTok, report it under the rule it breaks, such as harassment, private information or impersonation. A false claim that only damages your name is defamation, a legal matter: EU users file it under Report illegal content, everyone else through TikTok's Report a problem form.

TikTok slander report routes: harassment, privacy, impersonation, copyright, and the EU defamation category

Most people who search for TikTok slander have one video in mind: a stitch, a storytime or a "PSA" that names them and gets a fact wrong. Then they open the Report menu, find no option called slander, libel or defamation, pick whatever sounds closest and hope.

We went looking for that word on 5 October 2026. We pulled the live text of TikTok's Community Guidelines, the edition marked for the second half of 2026, and searched its Safety and Civility section for defamation, slander and libel. None of the three is there. They are missing from the US Terms of Service updated 15 July 2026 as well. The only TikTok page that defines defamation is the one written for the EU Digital Services Act. That gap shapes everything below. Moderators enforce the guidelines, while "this is false and it damages me" is a legal call that TikTok handles on a separate track.

What does TikTok's defamation policy say, if it has one?

There is no TikTok defamation policy inside the Community Guidelines. The closest written rule sits on TikTok's Reporting Illegal Content page, which describes defamation as a false statement of fact or allegation about a person or organisation that "seriously harms their reputation". That page exists because the Digital Services Act requires a way to flag suspected illegal content in the EU, and defamation is one of its 14 categories, listed between harassment or threats and consumer-related offences.

The guidelines do cover the behaviour that usually travels with a false claim. TikTok's Safety and Civility rules ban harassment and bullying, "including when it's done in retaliation", and the privacy section counts reputational damage among the harms of exposed personal details. The misinformation rule is narrower than people expect. It targets false claims that could cause significant harm to individuals or society, and its examples come from public safety, health, crises and elections, not a quarrel between two creators.

Is it slander or libel when the lie is in a TikTok video?

Strictly, slander is spoken and libel is published in a lasting form, so a posted video with a caption sits much closer to libel in most legal systems. That distinction matters to a lawyer drafting a claim. It doesn't matter to TikTok's form, which asks the same four questions whatever you call it.

How to get a video removed from TikTok when it lies about you?

Report it under the rule it most clearly breaks. A guideline breach can come down worldwide, while a legal claim is judged country by country. In the app, press and hold the video or tap Share, then Report, choose the reason and Submit; our walkthrough on reporting a single TikTok video in the app covers each screen.

What the video doesReport it asWhy that route
Calls you names, threatens you or rallies people against youHarassment and bullyingA guideline breach; no legal argument needed
Shows your workplace, address or phone number next to the claimA privacy reason, or the privacy portalExposed personal details break a rule even when the claim itself is vague
Comes from an account pretending to be youImpersonationTargets the account, not one clip
Reuses your own footage to make the claimCopyright webformYou own the clip, so whether the claim is true doesn't enter into it
States something false about you as fact, and nothing elseEU: Report illegal content > Defamation. Elsewhere: Report a problem formNeeds a legality decision, not a guideline check

Read the first four rows before the last one. A pile-on video with your address in it is far easier to remove under harassment or privacy than under defamation, because the reviewer checks it against a written rule instead of weighing who is telling the truth. The guides for each lane: the harassment report route, reporting a fake profile that poses as you, and reporting stolen content when the clip is yours. If you can't decide whether to flag the clip or the whole profile, see the account-versus-video choice, and TikTok's violation categories, case by case helps when two reasons seem to fit.

How to report defamation on TikTok from the EU?

Use Report illegal content and pick Defamation. TikTok's DSA page gives the path for videos, comments and LIVEs in the app, and the same option on the website behind the three-dot menu at the top of a video:

  1. Press and hold the video, or tap Share. On the website, open the three-dot menu.
  2. Tap Report, then Report illegal content, then Defamation.
  3. Select the country where you believe the content is illegal. This field is required.
  4. Name the law if you can. It's optional, though TikTok asks you to be as specific as possible.
  5. Quote the exact statement, say who it is about, confirm you are that person or represent them, and explain why it is false and why it seriously harms their reputation.

Step five is where most reports fall over. TikTok warns that reporting content as illegal "may have serious consequences" and says it will reject a report that lacks enough detail to judge legality. "She lied about me" gets rejected. "At 0:42 she says I was fired from a named café for theft; I resigned in March, and here is my reference letter" gives the reviewer something to weigh.

How to report defamation on TikTok: the four answers the form asks for and the three checks TikTok runs

The order of review matters too. TikTok first checks the video against its own guidelines and may remove it globally if it breaks one. Only if it stays up does the legality check start, and content found illegal is generally restricted in the country you named, sometimes across the EEA, occasionally removed outright. Reporters hear the decision either way, including when TikTok decides the content is not illegal, and can appeal it.

Only two of the addresses people search for loaded a working form when we opened them on 5 October 2026. This is what each one showed.

The Report a problem form

When we opened https://www.tiktok.com/legal/report/feedback, we saw a page titled Report a problem that says the information you share will only be used to respond to your report. Its Topic menu held these 12 entries:

  • Account access / security
  • Change date of birth
  • Change account information
  • Report a bug/feature request
  • Report a potential violation
  • Report an underage user
  • Creator Rewards Program
  • TikTok For Business / TikTok Shopping
  • Lemon8
  • Effect House
  • TikTok on TV
  • Accessibility

For a slanderous video, choose Report a potential violation, then Content violation. The next menu offers a Community Guidelines violation, intellectual property infringement, potential privacy violations or Others, and a false claim with nothing else attached belongs under Others. Our guide to filing a report with screenshots and links shows how to fill the free-text box so a reviewer can act on it.

The privacy portal and the DPO link

A TikTok privacy report starts at https://www.tiktok.com/legal/report/privacy, where TikTok asks which of six situations fits: being bullied or harassed, someone pretending to be you, inappropriate content, intellectual property, an account issue, or a privacy concern and data-rights request. Only the last opens the Global privacy web form, which TikTok recommends when the other options don't fit. That is the TikTok privacy violation report form most people mean, and it suits TikTok legal report privacy requests about your own data, not an argument over whether a claim is true. Its Continue button didn't advance in our automated browser, so we can't list the fields behind it.

TikTok's EEA privacy policy, last updated 30 November 2025, says you can reach the Data Protection Officer through https://www.tiktok.com/legal/report/DPO. From our connection outside the EEA, that address returned a not-found page in capitals and in lower case, so it may only load for European visitors. The same policy gives a postal fallback: TikTok Technology Limited, 10 Earlsfort Terrace, Dublin, D02 T380, Ireland, plus a London address for UK users. Some search results point to a separate page for submit requests under https://www.tiktok.com/legal/report as well; we found no such form, and every form we did find handles one topic only.

Is there a TikTok report email for slander or privacy complaints?

No. TikTok's US privacy policy, updated 15 July 2026, lists two contact routes: the webform at /legal/report/privacy and a mailing address, TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC, Attn: Privacy Policy Inquiry, 5800 Bristol Parkway, Suite 300, Culver City, CA 90230. No TikTok legal report email address for defamation appears in that policy, in the guidelines or on the illegal-content page.

The one inbox on the public record is copyright@tiktok.com, which TikTok registered with the US Copyright Office as its DMCA agent. It takes copyright notices only; read how a TikTok takedown notice is built before you write to it. Watch for the reverse, too. A message signed "TikTok Legal" that asks for a fee or a login to process your report is a phishing pattern, and TikTok's own safety pages say it will never ask for your password or verification codes.

If you report a TikTok video, will it be deleted?

Only if the review finds a breach or, in the EU, illegality. A report asks for a review; it is not a vote. TikTok's Community Guidelines enforcement report for January to March 2026 counts 184,012,576 videos removed, 99.3% of them before anyone reported them, and where a removal did follow a report, 96.2% happened within two hours. Those figures cover guideline breaches. A defamation report that succeeds usually gets the video blocked in one country rather than deleted, so viewers elsewhere may still see it.

So the question behind every "TikTok report video delete" search has no shortcut. Ten reports of a video that breaks no rule produce ten reviews that find nothing. Sellers of a mass report bot, a spam report bot or account report bots promise otherwise, and the gap between the pitch and the result is laid out in what a TikTok mass report tool actually does and in our look at whether report numbers matter. Coordinated false reports also breach TikTok's US Terms, which bar unfounded reports and complaints, and they often arrive alongside fake accounts, as our piece on impersonators who also organise mass reports shows. Before answering one of the paid TikTok account removal offers in your DMs, read what buyers usually end up with.

What can you do when TikTok won't remove the video?

Appeal if you're in the EU, then look at the poster rather than the platform. Beyond the appeal, defamation law in many countries aims the claim at the person who made the statement. In the US, Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act stops a platform being treated as the publisher of what its users post, so a defamation case runs against the creator, and a court ruling that the statement is defamatory is the document platforms tend to act on. In England and Wales, section 5 of the Defamation Act 2013 sets out a notice-of-complaint process for website operators. A lawyer where you live can tell you which applies.

Whatever route you take, keep the evidence first. Screen-record the video with the date visible, copy its link and the account's profile link, note the view count, and save any comments that repeat the claim. Don't stitch or duet it to argue back. That spreads the claim further and can turn a one-sided case into a two-sided feud.

If the account exists only to target you, an account-level takedown fits better than reporting videos one at a time, and the violations that really get an account banned explains the threshold. When someone sells products off the back of false claims about a rival, see getting someone's TikTok Shop removed. If the harm is live and spreading, getting a TikTok taken down fast lists the quickest legitimate routes. Two limits are worth knowing: no report leads to deleting another person's TikTok account, and closing your own TikTok account removes your videos, not theirs. If the account squats on your name, reclaiming a TikTok username is a separate process. FAQ

Can you sue someone for slander on TikTok?

Often, yes, but the claim usually runs against the person who posted it, not TikTok. In the US, Section 230 generally stops a platform being treated as the publisher of what its users post. Defamation law differs by country, so ask a local lawyer, and keep a dated screen recording of the video first.

Will the person know I reported their video for defamation?

TikTok says it won't disclose a reporter's identity to the person reported, and EU rules let a platform name a notifier only where strictly necessary. A defamation report is about you by definition, though, so the poster may guess who filed it.

How long does TikTok take to review a defamation report?

TikTok publishes no timeline for legal reports. For guideline breaches, its January to March 2026 enforcement report says 96.2% of report-led removals happened within two hours. A legality decision can take longer, because a reviewer has to weigh your explanation.

Can I get a TikTok video removed if what it says is true?

Not as defamation, which TikTok defines as a false statement. A true but harmful video can still break a rule: posting your address or phone number, harassment, and intimate images shared without consent all have their own report reasons.

What if the slander is in the comments rather than the video?

Report the comment itself. Press and hold it, tap Report and choose a reason. In the EU, TikTok's Report illegal content option covers comments and LIVEs as well as videos, so the Defamation category is available there too.

Is calling someone a scammer on TikTok defamation?

It depends on whether it is presented as fact and whether it is false. An honest review or opinion is not defamation; a specific false allegation, such as saying someone kept a named customer's money, may be. TikTok's form asks you to explain exactly why the statement is false.

Can TikTok's Data Protection Officer remove a defamatory video?

Not as a defamation matter. The DPO route in TikTok's EEA privacy policy is for questions about how TikTok handles personal data. If the video exposes your personal information, use the privacy portal; if it only makes a false claim, use the defamation report.
