How to delete a TikTok account, and what to do when you cannot log in

To delete a TikTok account you must be signed in: open Settings and privacy, then Account, then Deactivate or delete account. Deletion runs on a 30-day hold before it becomes permanent. Without a working login there is no delete button, only account recovery first, and nobody can delete an account they do not own.

US uninstalls of the TikTok app climbed roughly 150% in the five days after the American joint venture was announced, according to Sensor Tower figures reported by CNBC on 26 January 2026. Hardly any of those people deleted an account.

They deleted an app. The two things feel identical on the day you do them and are nothing alike a month later, which is where most of the trouble on this page begins.

Uninstalling the app is not deleting the account

Three separate actions get called deleting, and only one of them ends an account. Removing the app clears it from your phone; your profile, your videos and your follower count sit exactly where you left them, searchable by handle. Clearing a saved login on a shared device does the same nothing. Removing a follower or blocking somebody adjusts what you see, and their profile carries on without a scratch.

Deletion is the only action that touches the record itself, and TikTok puts it behind your own login for a reason: it is irreversible once the hold expires.

How to delete a TikTok account from the app or the web

Yes, and the control is yours alone. TikTok keeps deletion inside the signed-in account, so there is no email address, no phone line and no support agent who performs it on request. In the app:

1. Open your profile and tap the menu button in the top corner.
2. Choose Settings and privacy, then Account.
3. Tap Deactivate or delete account.
4. Pick permanent deletion rather than the temporary deactivation option.
5. Confirm with the code TikTok sends to your linked phone or email.

The browser route reaches the same switch and is worth knowing, because it sidesteps a blocked app screen:

1. Sign in at tiktok.com and open Settings from the left-hand rail.
2. Go to Manage account.
3. Choose the deactivate or delete option.
4. Complete the same verification step.

Read the screen rather than any guide, including this one. TikTok's Help Centre page on deleting an account is the canonical source, and the wording drifts between app versions: older write-ups still send you to Manage account on mobile, where current builds show Account. How to permanently delete a TikTok account

Choose deletion, then stay out. Deactivation parks the profile and waits for you; deletion starts a clock, and TikTok's flow states that the account is held for 30 days before removal becomes permanent. Sign in during that window with any device and the account comes straight back, cancelling the request. That single behaviour causes most of the failed deletions we hear about: someone opens the app out of habit on day nine, sees their videos restored, and assumes the request never went through.

How long does it take to delete a TikTok account?

Submitting the request takes about a minute. Everything after that is a waiting game with three distinct stages, and they get conflated constantly. The contrast with enforcement is stark: TikTok took down 86.5% of violating videos within 24 hours in the first quarter of 2026, while your own deletion sits out the full hold regardless.

That last row matters if your reason for leaving is privacy rather than tidiness. TikTok's privacy policy ties retention to purpose rather than to a date, so "deleted" describes what other users can see, not a guaranteed wipe of every backend record.

Can you delete a TikTok account without logging in?

No, and every workaround circulating online is really an account-recovery story wearing a disguise. The delete control lives inside the account. Reaching it means proving the account is yours, which is the whole task when the credentials are gone.

Work the ladder in order: Forgot password on the login screen, then the code sent to a linked phone or email, then TikTok's identity verification if both of those are dead ends. When nothing on that list applies, the last honest lever is the TikTok Privacy Portal, whose menu includes "I have an account-related issue" and "I would like to report a privacy concern or exercise my data rights". Deletion sought that way is a data-rights request, handled manually and slowly, and TikTok can refuse it if you cannot establish ownership.

Ignore the advice about emailing support until the account vanishes. TikTok's Report a problem form offers categories including Account access or security, Change account information, Change date of birth and Report an underage user. Not one of them is a deletion channel.

Deleting a TikTok account without agreeing to the new terms

This is the sharpest complaint of 2026, and it has a workable answer. CBS News reported that "since Jan. 22, when TikTok officially came under U.S. ownership, the app has presented users with a pop-up screen alerting them to the new terms of service and privacy policies. To continue to use the service, users must click 'agree,' or else they are blocked from using TikTok" (CBS News, 28 January 2026). A gate you cannot pass is a gate you cannot delete through.

Two things follow. First, the browser at tiktok.com is the practical route, since Settings there opens from the left rail rather than from behind the banner. Second, this is not a one-off: TikTok's US Terms of Service now names TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC as the operator and carries a July 2026 update date, so the accept prompt can reappear whenever the document changes.

The airplane-mode trick doing the rounds is folklore. Cutting the connection can hide a banner, but it does not record a deletion request, and it certainly does not shorten the hold. Accepting the terms and then deleting is the sequence that ends the relationship; refusing the terms and walking away leaves the account live and the data where it is. How to delete a TikTok Lite account, and where Shop is different

TikTok Lite is a separate, stripped-down app rather than a separate service, and users consistently report that it signs in with the same credentials and shows the same deletion path. TikTok does not publish a Lite-specific deletion page, so treat that as observed behaviour: check inside the app you actually installed, and delete from whichever one holds the profile.

Lite has its own regulatory history worth knowing, because it explains why the app behaves differently in Europe. The European Commission opened proceedings on 22 April 2024 over the Lite Rewards programme, and TikTok's commitment to withdraw Lite Rewards from the EU permanently was made binding on 5 August 2024.

Shop and business profiles are the real exception, and the gap is wider than most people expect. TikTok's Seller University guidance on closing a Shop account requires that all orders be completed or closed for 90 calendar days, that every listing be deactivated, that disputes and unsettled fees be cleared, and that a 30-day public closure notice run its course, all of it handled on the commerce side rather than in the app's account menu. What if the account is not yours?

Then you cannot delete it, and neither can we, and neither can anyone selling you the promise. Only the owner holds that switch. Everyone else files a report, and TikTok alone decides. The platform removed 86,288,705 fake accounts in the first quarter of 2026 (Q1 2026 Community Guidelines Enforcement Report), and its proactive removal rate across that quarter was 99.2%. Almost everything that comes down was never reported by anybody, which tells you how little the machine cares who asked.

Early on we treated every inbound link the same way. That changed after a run of cases we handled where the target account turned out to belong to the person asking. They had lost the email, could not get past the login screen, and had decided that getting the profile banned was the only route left to make it disappear. When the account genuinely belongs to somebody else and genuinely breaks a rule, the route depends on the rule. Which disposes of the software being sold for this. Nothing marketed as a mass report bot, an account report bot or a spam report bot has access to a deletion switch, because no such switch is exposed to anyone outside TikTok. Parents arrive here with a version of the same problem. A child's account they cannot get into is still deleted the same way, from inside it, so the practical move is usually recovery rather than escalation. Age is the exception: TikTok removed 25,764,372 accounts suspected of belonging to under-13s in that same quarter, and its Report a problem form carries a Report an underage user category for precisely this. That route asks TikTok to enforce its own age rule, which is a different thing from asking it to honour a deletion request.

One case deserves an honest answer rather than a route. Families asking to close a deceased relative's account will not find a form for it: TikTok publishes no deceased-user process, and the Privacy Portal's account-related option is the only lever, handled manually and slowly. Expect to send documentation, and expect no timeline.

So decide which side of the line you are on, then act today.
